Extend The Light Rail by 2018 Commonwealth Games

    Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Mr Rob Molhoek (Member for Southport) and the Qld State Government has set the Gold Coast the challenge to show that Extension of the New Gold Coast Light Rail before the 2018 Commonwealth Games is a priority for our city.

It follows the Premier’s comments last month that the Newman Government would commit to the extension of the light rail if they were elected next year with a mandate to recycle government assets to enable more than $8bn to be spent on infrastructure projects.

'But the people of the Gold Coast must speak up', Mr Molhoek said.

“The Premier has confirmed our government will prioritise delivery of the light rail extension, but only if there is an undeniable call from the community that this is a vital project for our city,” Mr Molhoek said.

Mr Molhoek has sponsored a petition, backed by the Southport Chamber of Commerce.

President Laird Marshall said the Southport and wider Gold Coast business community sees the connection of the light rail to the Helensvale train station as a huge economic driver.

“We’re already seeing the result of increased activity along the light rail corridor,” he said.

“Our city needs an integrated, world-class transport network if we are to realise our potential and drive economic growth.”

The petition can be signed online at (it only takes a minute):

    Southport Priority Development Area

    Wednesday, July 03, 2013

The Gold Coast City Council is in the process of creating a Priority Development Area for Southport. This will remove a lot of the barriers that have been preventing business starting and thriving in the Southport CBD and allow for innovation and regeneration. Part of the creation of the PDA will be the establishment of a group within council that will be a one-stop-shop for development within Southport.

For more information on the PDA and the resulting planning processes visit the Gold Coast City Council Website.
