Queensland Health is currently undertaking the largest infrastructure project in Australia with the construction of the new Gold Coast University Hospital. Due for completion on the 12th December 2012, this new facility will provide the Gold Coast with expanded health services as well as creating job during and after its construction.
Work is progressing on time and on budget with more than 4 million work hours having been completed with a maximum workforce of approximately 2300. The superstructure of the buildings has been completed moving focus towards external cladding and internal fit off. The future of the existing Gold Coast Hospital is uncertain. Despite this, Queensland Health has confirmed it will be providing health services in the area but not on the main triangular site. Details of the location and services to be offered are to be released at a future date.
The Southport Chamber of Commerce is meeting with Queensland Health representatives to offer assistance on determining the future of this site. We see the best possible solution for the site as one that is a high level employment generator which will maintain and possibly increase the patronage currently experienced by surrounding businesses. Further information about the progress of this campaign will be posted as it becomes available.
