The New Gold Coast University Hospital
The New Gold Coast University Hospital
Work on the new hospital is progressing with 570,000 working hours completed to date resulting in the completion of the basement to the main building and the commencement of the Lower Ground level. Road infrastructure upgrades are well underway including the construction of the new internal road network within the site. The main structure of the project is beginning to grow out of the ground and will grace the parkland skyline in the not too distant future.
The budget for the completion of the project currently stands at almost $1.8 billion and anticipated employment of more than 2000 people at the height of construction. This means more jobs for the local community and potentially more money for local businesses. Once open, the new hospital will significantly increase employment within the health sector of Southport due to the hospitals increase in size and services.

The contract for construction and running of the multi-level car park which is to be located to the Olsen Ave end of the site is nearing finalisation with construction to commence soon after. Parking charges have formed part of the negotiations with Queensland Health endeavoring to keep the cost to the public to a minimum. Significantly higher numbers of car parks will be available compared to the current hospital. Negotiations are also underway for an operator of the adjoining private hospital.
The total number of beds in Stage 1 of the new hospital will be 750 with an approximately 300 additional beds to be provided by the adjoining private hospital site. Along with the expansion of the Robina Hospital, this represents a significant increase in the bed numbers available to Gold Coast residents. The Gold Coast University Hospital site also allows for future expansion of the facility to meet the growing need of the surrounding community.
Recently Don Glynn from the GCUH Project Office presented a progress update to the attendees of our April Breakfast Meeting. The project is on time and expected to open on the 12th December 2012. Further information will be posted on this page as it becomes available and can also be found at the links below.
The Existing Gold Coast Hospital, Southport
The future of the existing Gold Coast Hospital is uncertain Despite this, Queensland Health has confirmed it will be providing health services in the area. Further details will be released as soon as the service mix and format has been finalised. The Southport Chamber of Commerce is meeting with Queensland Health representatives to offer assistance on confirming the future of this site. We see the best possible solution for the site as one that is a high level employment generator which will maintain and possibly increase the patronage currently experienced by surrounding businesses. Further information about the progress of this campaign will be posted as it becomes available.
